Austin Air Systems: Built for Performance
Austin Air's products also feature a high-velocity airflow, which creates a clean air pocket around the user. The 360° intake system draws air into all sides of the purifier and then passes it through the filter. If you turn on an Austin Air cleaner next to a competitor’s unit, you can really feel the difference. Austin Air purifiers clean the air in most bedrooms in less than 15 minutes. Austin Air Cleaners use energy-efficient PSC motors which means that running your purifier uses less energy than some light bulbs!
Your Austin Air purifier is warranted to be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of 5-years from the date of purchase.

Since 1990, over thirty years.
All filters have the same first two stages of the filter as follows:
- STAGE 1 – Large Particle Pre-filter. Removes particles easily seen by the naked eye (e.g. dust, hair, and pet dander)
- STAGE 2 – Medium Particle Pre-filter. Removes small to medium size particles (e.g. molds, spores, and pollen)
The filters differ as identified below:
The Allergy Machine:
- STAGE 3 – 60 sq. ft. of True Medical Grade HEPA. Removes 99.97% of all particles larger than 0.3 microns and 95% of all particles larger than 0.1 microns.
- STAGE 4 – Military-Grade HEGA Carbon Cloth. HEGA (High-Efficiency Gas Arrestance), provides an extremely large surface area for the adsorption of chemicals, gases, viruses, and bacteria.
HealthMate:
- STAGE 3 – Over 780 cubic inches of Activated Carbon and Zeolite. Removes chemicals, gases, and odors.
- STAGE 4 – 60 sq. ft. of True Medical Grade HEPA. Removes 99.97% of all particles larger than 0.3 microns and 95% of all particles larger than 0.1 microns.
HealthMate Plus:
- STAGE 3 – Over 780 cubic inches of Activated Carbon, Potassium Iodide Impregnated Carbon, and Zeolite. Removes Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, benzenes, chemicals, gases, and odors.
- STAGE 4 – 60 sq. ft. of True Medical Grade HEPA. Removes 99.97% of all particles larger than 0.3 microns and 95% of all particles larger than 0.1 microns
The Bedroom Machine:
- STAGE 3 – Over 780 cubic inches of Activated Carbon and Zeolite Removes chemicals, gases, and odors.
- STAGE 4 – 60 sq. ft. of True Medical Grade HEPA. Removes 99.97% of all particles larger than 0.3 microns and 95% of all particles larger than 0.1 microns.
- STAGE 5 – Military-Grade HEGA Carbon Cloth. HEGA (High-Efficiency Gas Arrestance), provides an extremely large surface area for the adsorption of chemicals, gases, viruses, and bacteria.
Pre-filters are made of bonded polyester.
The HEPA (High-Efficiency Particle Arresting) filter was developed by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission to filter out sub-micron particles. All true medical-grade HEPA is laser-tested and must remove a minimum of 99.97% of all particulate matter greater in size 0.3 microns. Austin Air’s HEPA filters also remove 95% of all particles larger than 0.1 microns. All Austin Air purifiers feature true medical-grade HEPA filters.
Sixty (60) square feet, much more than competitors.
HealthMate and Bedroom Machines contain over 780 cubic inches of activated carbon and zeolite, much more than competitors' models. HealthMate Plus contains over 780 cubic inches of Activated Carbon, Potassium Iodide Impregnated Carbon, and Zeolite for the removal of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, benzenes, chemicals, gases, and odors.
HEGA (High-Efficiency Gas Arrestance) is a term that is unique to Austin Air. A HEGA filter is a military carbon cloth filter medium that is featured in our Allergy Machine and Bedroom Machine.
Activated carbon is effective at removing gas molecules and odors. Activated carbon is the most common element found in military gas masks. The most common method of activating carbon is a two-stage steaming process, which enlarges the carbon’s surface pore size. This in turn produces a more accessible internal surface area, allowing for greater odor and gas adsorption.
Zeolite is a natural mineral that has the distinct capability of adsorbing certain gas molecules. Zeolite is particularly effective in adsorbing formaldehyde, ammonia, and carbon monoxide.
CFM stands for Cubic Feet Per Minute. CFM measures the volume of air in cubic feet for each minute it moves. Austin Air fan CFM is 400 cfm on the highest setting and 75 cfm on the lowest setting.
CADR stands for Clean Air Delivery Rate. Austin Air does not use CADR as a performance measurement because it does not accurately measure clean air. CADR is calculated by multiplying airflow (cfm) by filtration efficiency, thus a higher cfm could mask a less efficient filter. As an example, a unit that has a flow rate of 200 cfm and a 50% efficient filter has a CADR of 100. A unit that has a flow rate of 100 cfm and filter efficiency of 100% will also have a CADR of 100. While both machines have the same CADR, the second unit will deliver cleaner air.
Yes, your Austin Air purifier is warranted to be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of five (5) years from the date of purchase; provided your Austin air purifier was operated under normal residential use and that you have completed and returned your warranty registration to Austin Air Systems.
Austin Air also provides a five (5) year pro-rated filter warranty, by far the most comprehensive in the industry. This means if the filter lasts less than five years, Austin Air will discount the cost of a new filter based on the number of years the filter has been in use. Rest assured, Austin Air filters are designed to last for an unprecedented 5 years under normal residential use.
There are two indications that your filter needs to be replaced:
- An unpleasant odor coming from the unit means that the carbon in the filter is full and the filter needs to be replaced
- Significantly reduced airflow coming from the unit means that the HEPA filter is full and the filter needs to be replaced.
Using an Austin Air purifier in an area that has increased levels of airborne pollutants may cause a filter to be replaced in less than five years. Indoor areas with many pets, new carpeting, paint fumes, heavy smoking, urban pollution, photo studio, etc. all can diminish a filter’s life.
The amount of carbon, as well as the carbon bed thickness, allows Austin Air to provide a pro-rated five (5) year warranty. Our filters should last for five years in a normal household setting.
The quantity of carbon/zeolite and the amount of true medical-grade HEPA paper that is in the filters establish the life of the filter.
You can replace your filter with any filter type: Allergy Machine, HealthMate, HealthMate Plus or Bedroom Machine.
Both ends of the filter have a rubber sealing gasket going around them. Because the filter is inserted while the machine is upside down, the end of the filter labeled “top/motor side” is placed label side down into the unit. To ensure correct placement, one gasket is very close to the inner edge of the end cap, and the other is closer to the center. The end with the gasket that is closer to the center is the end that goes in farthest from the motor.
Periodic (once per month) vacuuming of the four sides of the outside screen is recommended. This is the only regular maintenance required for your purifier.
The entire body of the air purifier is made of solid steel, which has been welded together to prevent any rattling. The paint used is powder coating, baked at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. This process eliminates any odor or off-gas emissions while also enhancing the unit’s durability.
Yes, the fan blade, wheels/feet, and the control knob are plastic components.
The unit is designed to last a lifetime when properly maintained. All Austin Air purifiers feature a five-year mechanical warranty. The filter is designed to last for five years under normal residential use.
It can be placed anywhere in a room, including corners, but must be at least four (4) inches from the wall to give consistent effective results. The air cleaner should be placed in the bedroom at night with the door closed in order to produce the best personal results. The best room in the house to use a single machine is in the bedroom.
Square footage is difficult to state because everyone’s space is different. Factors such as ceiling height, room shape, number and location of windows and doors, and level of constantly incoming contaminants all have a unique effect on the amount of space that can be filtered in a given period of time.
Depending on the fan setting used, the noise level ranges from less than 50 to 65 decibels, or from the sound of a whisper to the sound of a normal conversation.
No, Austin Air purifiers do not produce ozone, ions, or negative ions. Ozone is active oxygen and can be dangerous to people’s health. This is especially true for people with respiratory problems such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis.
No, varnish is not used to coat the motor winding.
The purifiers use an ordinary 120-volt outlet. The maximum draw is approximately 147 watts on the high setting or 1 cent per hour, average cost.
Austin Air purifiers are CSA/NRTL approved.
Our purifiers use true medical-grade HEPA paper, carbon, steel, a 360° intake, and a directional export vent.
Air moves through the air purifier by means of a fan. The purifier has been specifically designed to utilize this fan to maximize the air velocity discharging from the unit and to minimize the energy the fan uses to pull air into the filter. This is done by the use of a large open area in the screens through which air passes before it goes through the filter. Simply stated, air cannot come out of the unit unless it passes through the screens and the filter. If you feel air coming out of the louver, it has passed through the filter.
