What Are Electrostatic Sprayers and How Do They Work for Disinfecting Surfaces?

Discover the Benefits of Electrostatic Sprayers for Touch-Free Disinfecting

Electrostatic sprayers were first patented in 1907 by Harold Ransburg, but it wasn't until the 1940s that they became widely used in industrial applications. Initially, they were used for coating metal parts in the automotive and aviation industries, but their use has expanded to agriculture, healthcare, and sanitation. Today, electrostatic sprayers are used in various industries for different applications.

Some benefits of electrostatic sprayers include:

• Efficient coverage: Electrostatic sprayers use electrically charged particles to evenly coat surfaces, including hard-to-reach areas and surfaces with complex geometries.

• Faster application: Electrostatic sprayers can apply disinfectants and other liquids up to 75% faster than traditional spraying methods, reducing application time and labor costs.

• Reduced chemical usage: Electrostatic sprayers use less liquid to achieve the same coverage compared to conventional methods, which reduces the amount of chemical needed and lowers costs.

• Improved safety: Electrostatic sprayers are designed to minimize overspray and reduce the risk of exposure to chemicals, making them safer for operators and occupants.

• Better infection control: Electrostatic sprayers can effectively disinfect surfaces and control the spread of infectious diseases by eliminating bacteria and viruses.

• Versatility: Electrostatic sprayers can be used in a variety of settings, including schools, hospitals, airports, hotels, and more, to sanitize and disinfect surfaces.

• Sustainability: Electrostatic sprayers can reduce waste and promote sustainability by using less liquid and generating less hazardous waste than traditional spraying methods.

Electrostatic sprayers are an effective solution to the common disinfection problems that arise when wiping or spraying surfaces with disinfectant. Achieving adequate coverage can be difficult, and overspray and spatter may occur when too much disinfectant is sprayed. Additionally, hard-to-reach or non-uniform surface areas can pose a challenge, particularly in tight or congested spaces, leading to unsanitary conditions in places such as airplanes and restaurants.

To address these issues, electrostatic sprayers electrically charge the particles of the disinfectant they spray. This process involves positively charging the particles, causing them to repel each other. As you may recall from high school science class, “like” charges repel, while opposite charges attract. A grounded surface, such as the various surfaces found in high-traffic areas that need disinfecting, represents a great big negative charge. Positively charged particles of disinfectant are attracted to these surfaces, causing them to stick. The electrostatically charged particles of disinfectant push each other away, resulting in atomization and ensuring even coverage over the surface being sprayed.

Who Can Benefit from Using Electrostatic Sprayers?

Electrostatic sprayers are highly versatile disinfecting tools suitable for various industries and spaces. For instance, schools can use them to disinfect high-traffic areas like classrooms, gyms, and break rooms. Offices can benefit from their efficiency for disinfecting conference rooms, restrooms, and reception areas. Hospitals and healthcare facilities can use them to protect against germs on equipment, furniture, and patient rooms. Hotels can utilize electrostatic sprayers to sanitize guest rooms, lobbies, and restaurants. These are just a few examples of how electrostatic sprayers can benefit different industries and spaces, providing a cost-effective and efficient solution for maintaining optimal cleanliness and hygiene.

How to Clean with Electrostatic Sprayers

Manual disinfection can be challenging, as it often requires focusing on "high-touch" areas, leaving some surfaces untouched, especially those that are hard to reach. An advantage of electrostatic spraying is that it allows you to quickly and evenly coat every surface in a hospital area, for instance, addressing this issue.

Different applications require different cleaning solutions, and the Evaclean system featuring Protexus sprayers with PURTABS ensures effective cleaning no matter the space. PURTABS are effervescent sanitizing and disinfecting tablets that have been approved, certified, and proven to achieve repeatable results, based on application and dwell times.

For instance, while disinfecting food-contact surfaces, 100PPM of PURTAB multi-purpose solution is sufficient. However, to kill cold and flu viruses, salmonella, and staph bacteria, among others, you need hospital-grade disinfectant that requires 5 times that PPM. Certain bloodborne pathogens require even higher than 1,000PPM, whereas a solution of 1076PPM is recommended for COVID-19.

Protexus electrostatic sprayers can be fitted with different spray nozzles to ensure various levels of disinfectant coverage, such as the 60-micron spray nozzle and the 3-in-1 spray nozzle with 60, 80, or 110 microns. The latter is a multi-purpose nozzle that allows you to adjust the droplet size according to the surfaces you're treating and the germs you're trying to kill. By using an electrostatic sprayer, you can disinfect more surfaces, more thoroughly, and more consistently, no matter the environment.

Optimal Surfaces for Electrostatic Sprayer Disinfection

Electrostatic sprayers are recommended for hard, non-porous surfaces. These advanced tools can be used to disinfect surfaces that you would have previously disinfected manually. The main difference is that electrostatic sprayers make it more convenient to disinfect challenging areas that are difficult to reach or obstructed. With the positively charged particles, the spray can effectively reach and coat these areas for complete disinfection coverage.

When it comes to touch-free disinfecting, electrostatic sprayers are one of the most advanced tools in the cleaning industry. They provide complete and thorough coverage of all surfaces, even in hard-to-reach areas. By utilizing these tools, users can achieve complete and thorough coverage of all surfaces, ensuring safety and making cleaning more efficient.
